WELCOME
Welcome to Earthquake Spectra Online, the
electronic Internet edition of Earthquake Spectra, the professional
journal of the Earthquake
Engineering Research Institute (EERI). The online edition offers
dramatic new opportunities to quickly disseminate and retrieve
information pertinent to Earthquake Engineering worldwide. Earthquake Spectra Online
is an important step into the future for
Earthquake Engineering.
Earthquake Spectra Online
is launched using the professional Scitation platform of the
American Institute
of Physics (AIP). This service allows EERI to maintain full control
of editorial style and manuscript review, while providing complete
state-of-the-art online services to the membership based on the
latest technology and cost economies afforded by support of a large
number of other journals on the Scitation platform. AIP provides a full range
of services for the online edition as well as composition and
printing services for the hardcopy edition.
The online edition offers a number of new
opportunities to publish and retrieve information quickly and
efficiently. It is much more than a rendition of the printed
copy. The online edition:
- Permits rapid search and retrieval capabilities of
articles in Earthquake Spectra and a large number of other
journals through the use of the "keyword"-indexed
SPIN database
database of Scitation,
- Provides the opportunity for "one click" convenience to
view the abstract of articles in more than 5,100 other journals through
the use of direct reference linking provided by
SPIN database and
the CrossRef
database of over three million article records established by 83
leading publishers and library affiliates worldwide,
- Provides the first permanent digital archive for the journal
with the opportunity for archive of associated digital information
not appropriate for the hardcopy edition,
- Permits publication of color figures and color photos at
little or no additional cost,
- Permits "virtual filing cabinets" to be defined
for the collection of articles to facilitate later reference
and sharing with other researchers,
- Provides full text of every article in PDF format for
rapid retrieval,
- Provides Tables of Contents, Abstracts, and full text of articles
in HTML format with linked headings, figures, tables, and sections
to facilitate viewing and article delivery,
- Provides a DocumentStore
for the sale and purchase of articles by non-members,
- Provides opportunity for the sale of advertisement banners
to communicate services and products of interest to the membership,
- Minimizes production costs through the implementation of
integrated composition and formatting services for both the hardcopy
and online editions of the Journal, while expanding the accessibility
of information of interest to the EERI membership.
  Earthquake Spectra Online is an
important new edition of the Professional
Journal of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. As such, I would
like to extend a special note of thanks to those that have made
special contributions toward its successful implementation. Important
contributions include: the far-sightedness and approval of the
President, C. Poland, and the Board of Directors; contributions of
Thomas O'Rourke and Thalia Anagnos as Board liaisons and successive
chairs of the Publication Policy Committee; R. Boulanger and A. Dargush
in helping me with the initial feasibility studies of the Electronic
Publication Subcommittee; the Editorial Board for their support and
suggestions; Susan Tubbesing, Nancy Sutherland, and Xena van de Walle
for their professionalismn, support, and help in this new endeavor;
AIP, for their assistance in publishing both the hardcopy and the online
editions to meet the highest of professional standards; and a special
note of thanks to the Implementation Subcommittee and especially
T. Anagnos as chair, whose untiring efforts were a major contribution.
Earthquake Spectra Online is a well-thought-out
step for EERI that offers exciting new opportunities to facilitate
earthquake hazard mitigation efforts worldwide. As Editor, it is a pleasure
to welcome you to Earthquake Spectra Online. Your comments and
suggestions for improvement will be appreciated
