Concentration profiles along the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum inside a cell close to a group of open Ca2+ release channels. Gradients of free Ca2+ shown by the needles are orders of magnitude steeper than the gradients of fluorescent dye shown by the brown transparent surface. The Ca2+ concentration covers the range from less than 1 μM to 120 μM, the concentration of fluorescent dye is approximately 20 μM and essentially does not decay within the region shown by the picture (0.3×0.3 μm2). The concentration profiles are the results of 3D simulations of the nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations for free Ca2+ and Ca2+ binding proteins in the cytosol.
