The mean patient entrance skin dose (ESD) obtained from NEXT and other survey data (Refs. 39–41) are shown for the calendar years of 1964 through 2004. The ESD data are shown for three radiographic examinations: (a) a PA chest radiograph, (b) an AP abdomen radiograph, and (c) an AP lumbarsacral spine radiograph. Dose reductions for the mean ESD were by 50% to 70% for these survey data over a period of time.

The mean dose area product (DAP) for fluoroscopy procedures in from NRPB survey data (Refs. 72–74) are shown for the calendar years 1984 through 2005. Data are plotted for two fluoroscopy examinations: barium meals and barium enema. Dose reductions of the DAP were by about 50% for these survey data over a period of time.
