Presence of nonstationary noise in the kV projection radiographs. An ensemble of projection images was acquired on the benchtop imaging system. The noise in every image was computed by subtracting the mean of the 13 remaining images. The variance at every pixel for the 14 noise images was then plotted against the mean intensity value of the original 14 images. The variance and mean were strongly correlated as shown in (a), indicating the presence of nonstationary noise in the radiographs. The noise variance as a function of mean pixel intensity value in the filtered images is shown in (b).
