Planning tools for modulated electron radiotherapy
Planning and optimization process for MERT.
(a) EDT distances were calculated for each transverse segment, (b) EDT bins for the target, and (c) corresponding energy bins.
(a) MERTgui that shows the energy target bins for CW 4 case. For example, the energy target bins can be changed by using pixel, line, and block select features of this GUI that were shown in circles. (b) Optimized apertures for five energies and 11 segments (for example, 16 MeV_1, 16 MeV_2, and 16 MeV_3 are three segments that were targeted with the 16 MeV beam).
(a) Dose_Slider_GUI combines the doses from each segment with relative weights. The Dose Superimpose button combines the doses with the weights that were set using the sliders, and the final set of weights can be saved using the save button to the specified file name. (b) Dosimetric combination planning tool.
(a) Isodose lines demonstrating adequate target organ coverage for the MERT plan. (b) DVH comparison of MERT and conventional plans for the CW 1 case.
(a) Isodose lines demonstrating adequate target organ coverage with the MERT plan. (b) DVH comparison of MERT and conventional plans for the CW 2 case.
(a) Isodose lines demonstrating adequate target organ coverage with the MERT plan. (b) DVH comparison of MERT and IMRT plans for the CW 3 case.
(a) Isodose lines showing good target organ coverage. (b) DVH comparison of MERT and IMRT plans for the CW 4 case.
50% dosimetric combination plan for MERT and IMRT plans for the CW 2 case.
Nominal energies and corresponding effective energies modeled in Monte Carlo simulations and the 80% depth dose values that were used to create thresholds for the EDT edge bins.
MERT plan details; gantry angle, numbers of energies, number of segments, BEAMnrc phase-space file calculation time, MCSim dose calculation time, average number of particles in phase-space file, average uncertainty, and how many segments from each of the 6, 9, 12, 16, and 20 MeV energies.
Comparison of the (Gy) of organs at risk such as heart, ipsilateral lung, contralateral lung, and contralateral breast for all treatment plans (except the contralateral breast dose in CW 2 case).
