In selecting data from Bridgman’s work only those materials were considered for which the “knee” in the shearing torque vs pressure curve occurred to 10 kbars or below so that the data would be truly indicative of the internal shear strength of the material. This requirement eliminated from consideration many of the stronger elements and compounds. In addition, materials having phase transformations were eliminated from consideration because these transitions usually make it impossible to judge from the shape of the torque vs pressure curve whether or not valid shear strength data were obtained.
