4.This removes the difficulties inherent in the explanation proposed for these phenomena by the authors of ref. 1 that the active medium has a greater index of refraction at 6401 Å than at 6328 Å by an amount The proximity of the transition at 6402 Å to the longer wavelength laser transition almost certainly dictates that the average index of refraction at 6401 Å be lower, not higher, than the average index at 6328 Å. Also the value seems unreasonably high for an index of refraction difference in a dilute gas.
