10.Orbach and Tachiki [Phys. Rev. 158, 424 (1967)] have suggested that coupling of the electric multipole moments via the exchange of a virtual phonon may also be important in crystals such as ruby. We have carried out order of magnitude calculations which indicate that for rare‐earth salts the orbit‐lattice coupling is sufficiently weak that such processes should be negligible compared with the more usual Coulombic interaction in most cases.
