4.By “intense” is meant a pulse whose peak intensity is large compared to the average intensity of the beam. The “wave interaction” noise output from an unlocked multimode laser consists of many small, randomly spaced, ultrashort duration “pulses” (see Fig. 1 in this paper) but the probability that any of them will be found with an intensity ⩾μ times the average beam intensity is exp(−μ).
