10.The wave‐function overlap integral for the first two vibrational states of (R and X are rare‐gas and halogen atoms, respectively) with the RX ground state also provides a possible explanation for the appearance of a double peak in the “main continuum” emission spectra of several RX complexes at high pressure. The asymmetric character of the potential well causes a fraction of the emission to appear as a “hump” to the red side of the peak emission. Accordingly, double‐line laser emission has been obtained in KrF and ArF. Also, in our studies of spontaneous emission, the double peak was absent at low gas pressures (100 Torr Kr, 1 Torr ) due to smoothing of the spectrum by wave‐function contributions from higher vibrational levels.
