7.Typical ambipolar diffusion times, which determine the loss rate of ions and electrons from the 10‐mm‐bore discharge, were estimated to be ≅ 60 μsec at low buffer gas pressures and ≅ 600μsec at ≅ 10 Torr. Diffusion times in a 4‐mm‐bore tube would be about one‐sixteenth that of the above times and explains why the laser was experimentally observed to be very weak and to oscillate only within a much narrower range of conditions in the smaller bore tube.
8.The recombination rate of single ions is much slower than that from double ions, and, therefore, recombination does not significantly contribute to the emission of neutral lines for this experimental configuration.
