15.All the present investigations of the laser plasma are done with the laser on the low‐frequency wing of the Cs (6010.49 Å) absorption line, within from the line center. On the high‐frequency wing, self‐oscillations of the laser plasma develops, as manifested by fluorescence or by transmission monitoring. Such self‐oscillations are not well understood at present, but it may be related to selective doppler excitations: on the high‐frequency wing, the laser selectively excites atoms moving along the incident direction, while on the low‐frequency wing, it selectively excites atoms moving back towards the laser beam. Since the laser plasma is situated near the laser focus but displaced upstream, the negative feedback mechanism presently discussed seems to be more effective for the low‐frequency wing case.
