16.Cross sections obtained using this relationship are only to be compared with cross sections of other molecules obtained using the same technique and cell length. This is because the heavily structured, pressure broadened bandwidth of the TEA laser is ≫ the Doppler‐broadened linewidths of the NSF molecules. thus prohibiting each of the discrete laser modes from interacting, to the same degree, with a particular V, R transition. In spite of this limitation, our experience has shown that this technique provides a very good figure of merit for predicting how easily the upper laser level can be populated.
17.S. Freund, M. Buchwald, and C. R. Jones (unpublished) obtained results similar to ours by optically pumping NSF derived from a precursor.
