15.We have used an unmodified Nanoscope II, Digital Instruments, Inc. Our instrument cannot control the tip position when the constant current mode is not operative. In these experiments we relied on the thermal expansion and creep of the tip piezodriver (z) for the approaching phase. We only could determinate the tip excursion (magnitude and direction) a posteriori.
