10.(ii) According to the superstructure model of Le Page et al., the additional oxygen atoms may be incorporated every 4 or 5 unit cells while retaining the average BiO structure. 12.The result is somewhat surprising as, based on crystallographic reasons, one may argue that a prolongation of the c axis for an increasing oxygen content should occur. Despite this, the titration data are consistent with our sputter experiments that the c axis becomes shorter by increasing oxygen content.

14.A further reduction is not possible because the sputtering plasma becomes unstable: The plasma voltage begins to rise steadily, whereas the plasma current drops continuously. We suppose that this effect is caused by competing oxygen ionization and recombination mechanisms.
