10.O. Kubaschewski and C. B. Alcock, Metallurgical Thermochemistry (Pergamon, Oxford, 1979). We use the experimentally observed structures for bulk Se and bulk Zn (trigonal and hcp, respectively). The average interatomic distance in bulk Zn is underestimated by approximately 4%, in line with the result for the lattice constant of bulk ZnSe (-3.6%). Test for the II-VIs compounds ZnS, ZnSe, and ZnTe indicate that δH is accurate to within 0.2–0.3 eV when core corrections are used.

13.In view of the narrow range of stability of the new structure, reconstructions with higher Se coverage are very likely to be unstable with respect to precipitation of Se aggregates. Very high growth rates (such as those found at very low temperatures in Ref. 12) could then be explained by the appearance of clusters (Zn or Se) on the surface, or by the deposition of Se in amorphous form.
