10.Exceptions to this usual observation can occur if the disorder—structural and/or substitutional—produces a large buildup of states inside the crystalline band gap, so much so that the mobility edges, too, fall within the gap. Alternatively, besides the appearance of states in the crystalline gap due to disorder, there may be a mechanism that discourages localization of states induced by the disorder so that the mobility edges are pushed deep into the band tails. In such situations, the mobility gap in disordered systems will be smaller than the band gap in their crystalline forms.
