Field emission from cylindrical carbon nanotube cathodes: Possibilities for luminescent tubes
1.Several patents disclosing the use of field emission in lighting applications have been issued, but none of the proposed devices has been demonstrated.
2.G. Bekefi and T. Orzechowski, Phys. Rev. Lett. 37, 379 (1976), is the only report of field emission in cylindrical geometry that we found. It describes a magnetron (a microwave generator) where the microwaves are excited by the field emitted electrons. The cathode was a graphite rod 4.8 cm in radius, and the interelectrode gap amounted to However, the voltages used were 360 kV for currents of
3.A. A. Blyablin et al. describe a similar experiment in the Technical Digest of the Twelfth International Vacuum Microelectronics Conference (6–9 July 1999, Darmstadt, Germany), p. 346. The goal of the authors was to study the divergence of the electrons emitted from a carbon-coated cathode. The description is very brief, and the needed fields are higher than in our case.
