AFM image of photonic crystal ridge waveguide fabricated on LPE-grown BiLuIG film on GGG. A seven-quarter wave phase-shift step serves as resonant cavity and is visible in the figure.
Transmittance and polarization rotation response for TE input of a long single-defect photonic crystal on BiLuIG ridge waveguide. The transmittance is normalized to the output of a ridge waveguide with no photonic crystal. The diamonds plot the Faraday rotation in the latter. Three stop bands are visible, centered at 1552.5 nm, 1528.5 nm, and 1497.5 nm.
Polarization rotation and transmittance for TM input of long single-defect photonic crystal on BiLuIG ridge waveguide. The vertical arrows indicate the location of the stop bands and resonant polarization response. The transmittance is normalized to the output of a ridge waveguide without photonic crystal patterns. Shallower-than-TE stop bands are found for TM inputs.
Calculated transmittance and Faraday rotation for the fundamental TE mode in the photonic crystal by the transfer matrix technique. The model photonic crystal has the same grating period and length as the fabricated structure and same effective index as its fundamental TE mode.
