FIG. 1.

Plan-view SEM images of four representative alloy nanowires: (a) ZnSe, (b) , (c) , and (d) CdSe.

Image of FIG. 2.
FIG. 2.

(a) TEM image of a nanowire; the inset shows an enlarged view of the catalytic particle at the tip of the nanowire. (b) EDX spectra of the nanowire obtained at the catalyst particle (labeled tip) and at its trunk (labeled wire). The Cu peaks in both spectra come from the TEM grid used to support the sample.

Image of FIG. 3.
FIG. 3.

(a) High-resolution TEM lattice images of ZnSe (a) and wire (c) obtained along the [111] zone axis; (d) shows the XRD pattern of the alloy wires obtained with Cu radiation. The (200) and (400) peaks of zinc blende structure are clearly observed. The peaks at 31.8° and 66.1° are from the GaAs substrate, the peak at 44.2° is indexed to Au (200) and the peak at 36.1° is an artifact of the instrument, (b) High-resolution lattice image of a CdSe nanowire obtained along the [100] zone axis.

FIG. 4.

Room temperature PL NBE peak energy of alloy nanowires plotted as a function of their Zn content . The scattered rectangles with error bar are experimental data, and the solid line is a plot of the band gap of epilayer with Zn content according to Ref. 20. The inset shows representative PL spectra of (a) , (b) , and (c) CdSe nanowires.
