Architecture of MOPA source. ML: microchip laser, L: lens, OI: optical isolator, PM-YDF: Yb-doped fiber, DF: dichroic filter, BPF: bandpass filter, PCF1: core, Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber, and PCF2: core, rodlike Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber.
(Color online) core rodlike PCF amplifier pulse energy and average power vs pump power incident onto the PCF facet. Left inset: Pulse temporal profile acquired at pulse (the vertical scale was calibrated in units of power by calculating the pulse area and equating it to the measured pulse energy). Right inset: Cross-sectional view of the cleaved PCF end.
(Color online) Characterization of the core rodlike PCF. (a) Beam width vs distance from waist location. At each point, the beam width was determined as , where is the distance between knife-edge clip points corresponding to 16% and 84% of the full optical power reading. Solid line: Hyperbolic fit. From the fit, . According to Ref. 9 , this value overestimates the value obtainable via the second-moment method by . Therefore, we regard our obtained as a reliable and even conservative measure of the PCF beam quality. (b) Near-field image of output at full power. (c) Corresponding three-dimensional profile.
Peak-normalized spectrum ( resolution) of the rodlike PCF amplifier output (pulse ). Dashed line: Peak-normalized spectral transmission of the dichroic filter used to pump the PCF. The gray areas at the left and right sides of the pulse denote the wavelength ranges in which the Yb gain (hence ASE) and Raman gain peak, respectively. Inset: resolution, peak-normalized pulse spectrum (linear scale).
