Two conditions for dark states at the front using the LC layer between crossed polarizers: (a) the LC layer is aligned along the TA of the bottom polarizer; (b) the LC layer is aligned vertically.
(Color online) Calculated viewing angle characteristics: (a) the LC layer is aligned along the TA of the bottom polarizer; (b) LC layer is aligned vertically. Blue (innermost), green (inner), magenta (outer), and red (outermost) contour lines indicate the CR limits of 100:1, 50:1, 30:1, and 10:1, respectively.
Overall cell structure: (a) a three-terminal electrode structure consisting of the top electrode, the grid electrode, and the bottom common electrode is employed for dual-mode switching; (b) the angle between the rubbing direction and the grid electrode is 5°.
(Color online) Measured isocontrast contours: (a) WVA mode; (b) NVA mode. The boundary of the polar angle is 70° and TAs of crossed polarizers are 0° (bottom) and 90° (top).
