Photoswitching of a TTB-AB molecule. (a) Model structures of trans- and cis-TTB-AB configurations obtained from ab initio calculations (Ref. 7). (b) STM images showing single TTB-AB molecules on Au(111) (white box) in trans and photoswitched cis configurations.
Sequential images of a single island of TTB-AB/Au(111) after successive exposures to UV light. The first image is the preexposure configuration of uniformly trans isomers. The three following images were acquired after 1, 3, and total exposures to UV light.
Concentration of cis-TTB-AB molecules on Au(111) plotted vs total photon exposure for both UV and blue light, revealing photoswitching saturation behavior. The plotted fraction of cis TTB-AB molecules is an average over many similar islands on the same sample (statistical error is smaller than symbol size). Dashed lines are fits to data using the first-order rate equation discussed in the text.
