The system (inset) consists of a metallic film separating two semi-infinite dielectric regions, one of which is linear and the other of arbitrary nonlinearity. To illustrate our results, dispersion relations (lines) of SP modes in a MBBA/metal/air system typical of thick and thin metallic films are shown. For MBBA, the parameters are , , and , and a field is used (Ref. 21). The metal has a Drude dielectric constant with as for silver. For thick films, the SP modes coincide with that obtained by taking (dots) in Eq. (12), corresponding to treating the metal/dielectric and metal/Kerr medium interfaces separately.
