Fabrication concept of freestanding wrinkled thin films: (a) A sacrificial liquid resin layer is coated on a prestrained compliant rubber substrate; (b) a mechanical compressive strain is applied to the resin layer by removing the strain of the substrate at an appropriate moment during the curing process of the resin, leading to spontaneous wrinkling of the resin surface; (c) a thin film is deposited on the wrinkled sacrifice resin surface; (d) by removing the resin layer with solvent, a freestanding wrinkled film is realized.
