FIG. 1.

The multiphase improved Steinberg–Guinan model for the polycrystalline shear modulus of vanadium as a function of compression at zero temperature. The analytic model for the shear modulus at high pressure is formulated as a function of compression, as shown here. Also shown for comparison are the values calculated by the procedure (Ref. 9) and the original Steinberg–Guinan model (Refs. 15 and 16). The vertical dashed lines indicate the phase boundaries.

Table I.

Calculated single-crystal stress-strain coefficients and polycrystalline shear moduli for the and rhombohedral phases. All quantities are in units of megabar and the compression has been calculated using the ambient volume (after Lee et al. Ref. 9).

Table II.

Calculated single-crystal stress-strain coefficients and polycrystalline shear moduli for the bcc structure (Ref. 3). All quantities are in units of megabar, and the compression has been calculated using the same ambient volume as the rhombohedral case. An asterisk indicates that the bcc structure is not the ground state at that pressure. An entry with a double asterisk indicates that the bcc structure is mechanically unstable since , and the Reuss and VRH shear moduli are not well defined. The shear modulus relevant to dislocation glide in the bcc crystal is (Ref. 25) .
