The interatomic potentials for the ground state and the excited state during Cs–Xe collisions. The difference between these potentials causes the transition to occur with a range of energies that depend on the interatomic distance of the colliding atoms, thus giving rise to pressure broadening. The difference potential for this system is negative, and therefore also gives rise to a positive wavelength shift (lower energy). For this illustration the and coefficients of the Lennard-Jones potential were taken from Kielkopf (Ref. 31).

Results Cs and shifts and broadening determined in the present work compared with the most recent previous measurements of Andalkar and Warrington (Ref. 18) and Inoue et al. (Ref. 20). Note that the measurements of Andalkar and Warrington and Inoue et al. were limited to the low-density regime of 0–0.25 amagat and were taken at room temperature . Note that Table I of Inoue et al. contains a typographical error and units should be stated as instead of .
