(a) The layouts of the dual first-order dc SQUID planar gradiometers. The left is defined as gradiometer 1 and the right is defined as gradiometer 2. (b) There are four dc SQUIDs in each gradiometer. Gradiometer 1 contains SQUID 1, 2, 3, and 4. Gradiometer 2 contains SQUID 5, 6, 7, and 8. The SQUID 1 and 3 (or 6 and 8) have the same coupling direction to the pickup loop. On the other hand, the SQUID 2 and 4 (or 5 and 7) have the same coupling direction to the pickup loop.
