(Color online) (a) In ISS, optical pump beams with picosecond pulses are crossed to create a spatially periodic, temporally impulsive driving force that launches acoustic waves in the RDX bc-plane. CW probe light diffracted from the acoustic waves is combined with a reference beam and directed to a detector. (b) In PAI, a short pump pulse is focused onto a thin gold transducer. Heating and thermal expansion launch a broadband acoustic strain pulse into the RDX along the axis. A variably delayed femtosecond probe pulse is partially reflected off the acoustic strain pulse and directed to a detector along with light reflected from the gold film that serves as a reference beam.
