43.It is important to note that both isomers of the hydrogren cyanide-acetylene complex undergo rearrangement upon vibrational excitation (Ref. 31). As a result, the positive-going signals in the OSMS spectra arising from depletion of the pumped isomer are contaminated by a negative-going contribution from the increase in the population of the other isomer. Hence, these spectra should not be analyzed quantitatively. The effect is more significant in the “linear isomer” OSMS spectrum, since rearrangement from linear to T-shaped is more efficient than the reverse (Ref. 31). Photoisomerization does not occur (Ref. 31) in hydrogen cyanide-cyanoacetylene complexes, and thus the OSMS spectra observed in Fig. 1 are uncontaminated.
