Mesostructure formation of dipolar fluids in a strong external field for short-range potentials of increasing steepness and different confinements (slit or bulk). is the box length in the direction of the external field or the wall separation in the slit geometry. / denotes the internal energy (without contribution of the field), / is the dipole-dipole contribution, and / is the contribution from the short-range potential. The magnetization is , is the number of clusters in the final configuration, / is the average cluster size, is the minimum distance of approach of two particles. The particle number is = 4000. The number of trial MC moves per particle is in millions. The temperature is fixed at = 1, the density ρ = 0.05, the dipole moment μ = 2.75, and the field strength = 40.
