7.Here “undersaturated” refers to the supersaturation S as it is defined for pure components, i.e., where P is the actual pressure of the component in the gas phase, and is its equilibrium vapor pressure over a large amount of the condensed phase. For water, the supersaturation S is often called the relative humidity. For gas mixtures (assuming ideal behavior in the gas phase), the ratio of the actual partial pressure of component i, and its equilibrium vapor pressure over its pure liquid, is the activity of component i in the gas phase, i.e.,

15.Even for one‐component nucleation, problems have arisen in the comparison of theory with experiment because the experiments were often made at temperatures much colder than those at which critical quantities needed for the theory, such as surface tension, have been measured. For binary mixtures, especially nonideal ones, this problem becomes much more severe since more data are needed; yet, in general, mixture data are available only at room temperature.
