Schematic diagram of a motor-cargo system in single molecule experiments.1,10,2,11 The motor moves on a polymer track in steps. Each motor step corresponds to one reaction cycle and is statistically independent of any other steps. Mathematically, the motor is modeled as a stochastic stepper. The motor is elastically linked to a cargo that is much larger than the motor, and can be controlled and monitored by a laser trap. The motor behaviors are inferred from the measurements of the cargo.
