The summer school “Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics” was held at CRM Montreal in July 2011 and was the second part of the joint CRM-University of Cergy-Pontoise semester “Frontiers in Mathematical Physics.” The first part of the joint semester was held at the University of Cergy-Pontoise in May 2011. This issue of the Journal of Mathematical Physics is a selection of articles related to the topics covered and courses taught during the summer school. The organization of the joint semester would not have been possible without enthusiastic support of Francois Germinet, President of the University of Cergy-Pontoise. We also wish to thank Laurent Brunaeu and Roberto Livi for serving with us on the organizational committee. The funding for the joint semester was provided by ANR (Agence nationale de la recherche), CNRS, CRM, NSERC, McGill University, and University of Cergy-Pontoise. We are also happy to acknowledge, with special thanks to B. Nachtergaele, the financial contribution of the American Institute of Physics/“Journal of Mathematical Physics.”
