Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy: Raising Standards
As the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy enters its eighth year of publication, submissions continue to increase, and we now take the time to reflect on the future and mission of the Journal.
Read what Editors-in-Chief P. Craig Taylor and John A. Turner have to say!
A broad, interdisciplinary publication like the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy must necessarily look to expand its coverage to the cutting edge of global research and policy. It must also look to serve a large community where collaboration and cross-discipline communication are essential for progress. To these ends, we and the Associate Editors are in the process of making many substantive improvements to make the publishing and reading experiences more satisfying and impactful for authors and readers.

Article Acceptance Criteria
Articles presented in the Journal should report research that:
- makes a substantial contribution to and/or influences the direction of one or more areas of renewable and sustainable energy,
- reports transformative theoretical methods, advanced experimental techniques, or substantive repercussions of policy or economic initiatives affecting research and advancement worldwide,
- provides initial reports of highly significant findings that are of broad interest to the renewable and sustainable energy community (Letters),
- reviews the state of research in the field with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary view (Reviews), presents instructional papers on recent advances in emerging fields of interest to practitioners and researchers just starting out or changing research areas (Tutorials).
While these criteria have always been used, reviewers and editors of the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy will apply these specific criteria more stringently in the future. A full description of the Journal's scope and publication criteria has been updated on the Editorial Policies section of the journal website.
Special Topic: Marine Renewable Energy
From the Preface: Marine renewable energy produced from various sources has the potential to become a key contributor to global energy needs, not only because of issues and problems often related to the use of fossil fuels (e.g., environmental pollution, climate change, security in energy supply, price volatility in the international markets, and near-future depletion of resources) but also because of the vast and yet almost untapped energy resources available in the oceans and the long-lasting availability of those resources. Now Online – Special Topic on U.S. and China EcoPartnerships: Approaches to Challenges in Energy and Environment
From the Introduction: What do a landfill in Brookhaven, New York; shore-based power systems at the ports of Los Angeles and Shanghai; invasive carp in the Mississippi River; state-of-the-art combined cycle gas turbines in Harbin, and the carbon trading scheme in Shenzhen have in common? Each is being pursued under the umbrella of the U.S.-China EcoPartnerships program, and outlined alongside other innovative EcoPartnerships projects in this special volume of the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy. Organizations in both countries are working together to pilot breakthrough clean energy, environmental, and climate change solutions.
From the Foreword: The United States and China are the world's two largest economies with an important relationship. Large-scale, whole-of-society cooperative action—the kind that leads to economic benefits for both countries—is crucial both to combat climate change and to tackle our shared environmental challenges. It makes economic, national security, and environmental sense for us to work closely together.
