.A signal component has AM or FM when its amplitude or instantaneous frequency, respectively, is not constant.
.To facilitate reading this article, particularly the figures, a small abuse of notation is made in using the same symbol to designate discrete quantities and their continuous counterparts, such as and , respectively.

.Amplitude tracking of theoretical signals has been done using MATHEMATICA (http://www.wolfram.com).
.To facilitate the comparison with the true signal components in the same plot, local amplitude estimates have been normalized so that their mid value, defined as the arithmetic mean between maximum and minimum in the plotted time interval, coincides with the mid value of the amplitudes of the signal components.
.The straightforward and analytic-signal amplitudes have been plotted only at instants for which amplitude estimates have been calculated.
.“Manual” extraction of spectrogram values has been done using the polyline extraction tool available in TECPLOT (http://www.tecplot.com).
