This diagram depicts the power distribution of light propagating in the core of a bent fiber. Pure bend loss, of power , occurs in a fiber with continuous curvature when energy is dissociated from the wave front because the angular phase velocity of the light beyond a critical radius exceeds the allowed velocity of light in the medium.
