Expanded view of the environmental cell. A traditional plate window could be sealed directly to the main cell body (left side of expansion), or an ultrathin window could be compressed between o-rings in an adapter plate and thence be sealed to the main cell body (right side of expansion). Either window type could be accommodated on both sides of the cell.

Schematic (a) shows the base with vertical posts. The sample cell is shown bolted to the mounting block, which has holes to close-fit the stationary vertical posts. The sample cell could be positioned by sliding the mount along the posts, and fixed in place by attaching nuts to the threaded tops of the posts. In (b), the cross-correlation of two femtosecond mid-infrared pulses in a thin section of holder-mounted germanium shows the sample holder positioning reproducibility throughout repeated insertions and removals of the holder at the sample position.
