Energy level diagram of selected states of mercury. λ is tuned near a single photon resonance (6 S → 6 P), λ is tuned so that λ + λ is two-photon resonant (6 S → 7 S) and λ is tuned near a Rydberg resonance (9 P). The resulting sum frequency is generated at λ ≈ 125 nm.
