Ars Technica: US Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX), chair of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, has issued a subpoena to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The subpoena stems from a series of requests Smith has made for data and internal communications relating to a NOAA study published in Science, in which the organization updated its estimates of global surface warming based on new data and said the global trends are actually higher than had been previously reported. Although NOAA has provided the requested data, it contends that discussions among scientists are confidential. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) has sent a letter to Smith, criticizing his actions and claiming that his request exceeds Congress’ authority.
