The aim of the present paper is to show that Doppler-broadened spectra of the first Balmer line of Hydrogen can be used to determine the electric field strength in the cathode sheath of a low pressure glow discharge with high accuracy. Using a home-made Littrow-type diode laser spectrometer and opto-galvanic detection we obtained spectra from which the field strength and the direction of the field could be derived using quantum mechanical calculations of the Stark effect including fine structure.
