Intramolecular electronic dynamics and tunnel ionization of H2 in an intense laser field ( I ≈ 1014 Wcm−2 and λ = 760 nm) were examined with accurate evaluation of three‐dimensional two‐electron wave packet dynamics. Based on the results of population analysis of “field‐following” adiabatic states, an electrostatic model in which each atom in a molecule is charged by laser‐induced electron transfer and ionization proceeds via the most unstable atomic site is proposed. This simple electrostatic approach is applied to investigate the structural deformations of CO2 cations in an intense field.
