Z‐scaling formulae for adequate experimental conditions of a capillary discharge for e‐ collisional recombination X‐ray laser using H‐like ions were obtained analytically, which give a guide line for the design of an experimental set up. The dynamics of the capillary discharge were classified into three phases of pinch, expansion, and formation of gain. Dominant physical processes such as shock heating, adiabatic cooling, three‐body recombination, and optical trapping of H‐like Lyman‐alpha line were taken into account. A series of one‐dimensional MHD simulation with the parameters obtained by the z‐scaling formulae was performed for the atomic species of Be (z=4) through Al (z=13) and showed significant gain values for all the species calculated. This verifies that our formulae well predict appropriate conditions for the amplification of lines in H‐like ions by a capillary discharge. This analysis also shows the limit on the atomic number to which the capillary discharge may be applied for recombination X‐ray lasers.
