We report on a study of nuclei around 132Sn in terms of the shell model making use of an effective interaction derived from the CD‐Bonn nucleon‐nucleon potential. Attention is focused on the nuclei 132Sb, 134I, 134Sb, and 136I, which are a direct source of information on the particle‐hole and particle‐particle matrix elements of the proton‐neutron effective interaction. It turns out that the core polarization gives a significant contribution to the effective interaction which makes it adequate to produce a satisfactory description of all considered nuclei. Some discrepancies for the particle‐particle multiplets seem to evidence the need for a stronger core‐polarization contribution. The existence of a remarkable similarity between the 132Sn and 208 Pb regions is substantiated by our calculations.
