We review dispersive and resonant experiments in microwave Cavity Quantum Electro‐dynamics in which a single atom imprints a phase information on a mesoscopic field. The method is applied to perform state‐selective non‐destructive atom counting. It has also been used to prepare and study Schrödinger‐cat‐like states of the field containing several tens of photons. Perspectives for further studies are briefly presented.
