We revise the standard method for extracting spectroscopic factors from transfer reactions and discuss a new combined method which is based on including the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of the overlap functions into the transfer analysis. This new method determines the SF from fitting the internal part of the reaction amplitude, while the contribution of the external part, typically dominant, is fixed. This is in contrast with the standard approach in which the SF is extracted at the expense of the arbitrary variation of the external part contribution. As examples, we show results for (d,p) reactions on a variety of targets: 208 Pb, 7Li 12C, and 84Se. The modified method has the potential of improving the reliability and accuracy of the structure information. Ultimately, it can be used as a check of DWBA by simultaneously introducing the information on the ANC and SF into the analysis.
