As a consequence of the recent establishment of a deep third minimum in the potential energy surface of actinide isotopes the existence of short‐lived fission isomers in light actinides is predicted. A search was started in 234U using a geometrical projection method and nuclear track detectors. Excitation functions were measured, based on the known 3.8 ns fission isomer in 240Pu as reference. Preliminary results indicate the existence of a new isomer in 234U (t1/2 ∼ 87(17) ps), however a confirmation with an optimized target technology is in progress.
