Guided Ultrasonic Wave Inspection of Corrosion at Ship Hull Structures

Many technical structures like ships are subject to corrosion and fatigue damage during their service life. Corrosion damage often results in severe thickness reduction close to structural features of the hull, e.g., frames, stiffeners, and welds. This poses a significant inspection problem in modern double‐hull ships, where access for conventional inspection techniques is very limited. Guided ultrasonic waves can propagate over large distances in thin structures like the hull plates of a ship and allow for efficient nondestructive testing of such structures with limited access. The sensitivity of guided ultrasonic wave inspection and monitoring for damage detection close to structural features, e.g., stiffeners, in plate‐like structures, has been investigated in a two‐dimensional Finite Element Model (FEM). The combined interaction of the guided ultrasonic waves with defects and structural features in large structures has been modeled numerically to predict and improve the sensitivity and reliability of damage detection.
