Theoretical analysis of the Cu Kα resonant X‐ray emission Spectroscopy (RXES) in the pre‐edge region of La2CuO4 is made with a Cu 5O16 cluster model. The Cu 1s to the on‐site Cu 3d excitation by the electric quadrupole (EQ) transition and the Cu 1s to the off‐site Cu 3d excitation by the electric dipole (ED) transition are treated in a unified manner, and the calculated RXES spectra are in good agreement with recent experimental results. The valence hole distribution over 5 Cu and 16 O sites are demonstrated for the ground state and the EQ and ED excited states. The present calculation confirms that the Cu Kα RXES is a sensitive probe in detecting fine structures invisible by the conventional XAS measurements.
