61 Ni nuclear gamma resonance (NGR) spectra were measured at 4.2K for the mixed spinels ( ), and magnetic hyperfine fields ∣HA, B(x)∣ were derived for tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites. The B‐site fields lie in the range (∼20–94)k0e, quite comparable with values obtained for many octahedrally‐coordinated Ni compounds. For , Ni ions partially occupy A‐sites and the hf fields for these ions are anomalously large, varying from 440 kOe for to ∼630 kOe for . This later field value, which is also found for the related compound , is the largest yet reported for 61 Ni. It is suggested that the composition dependence of the A‐site field is due to large orbital contributions and supports an interpretation of Goodenough that spin‐orbit interaction dominates Jahn‐Teller interaction at A‐site Ni 2+ for the range .
